Cinematic Titanic: MST3K Reborn!

29 November 2008 11:54 AM, PST

Cinematic Titanic, a revival.

For the robust fan who remembers the sarcasm-laced weekly original TV show called Mystery Science Theater 3000 (aka MST3K), the time to miss the show has come… and gone. The creative forces that were behind MST3K have regrouped and created a new effort for movie ripping and call it Cinematic Titanic.  It has the same flair and edge as the original work, but goes just a bit further.

MST3K had characters sit around, their silhouettes in front of the movie while they added their own sarcastic observations to the obvious B quality works they played for the audience  A quick example would be if a car chase ended with a car exploding.  Don’t you sometimes think, “Why do the cars always explode at the end of these chases?“  Well, they don’t think it.  They say it.  It was originally on the airwaves from 1988 to

Rant: First Look At Gambit In ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’

29 November 2008 11:32 AM, PST

Some of you may have seen a brief glimpse of the infamous “ragin’ cajun” from leaked footage of the X-Men Origins: Wolverine teaser trailer that debuted at the Fox panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

For those who did not (and even those who did), we have the first official photo of Gambit thanks to Empire Magazine. This comes just days after a new picture of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine was released.

If you didn’t see the low-quality leaked videos but you’re excited to see the trailer for this movie like me, then you’re in luck as the official trailer for X-Men Origins: Wolverine debuts alongside The Day The Earth Stood Still on December 12th. That’s just two weeks away!

As for the image, this particular picture does not impress me. In those clothes with that face, I don’t see Gambit anywhere. It

A Better Look At The Uss Kelvin From ‘Star Trek’

28 November 2008 1:04 PM, PST

Intel has a Star Trek movie tie-in page set up to promote the film and they’ve added a cool Flash-based look at the Uss Kelvin, the ship commanded by Captain Christopher Pike. I have a feeling they’ll be adding a lot of cool stuff to the site as the weeks go by - probably shuttlecraft, other ships (maybe even the Uss Enterprise itself).

I took a few screen grabs and enhanced them to make it easier to make out details - you can see them below.

Side view of the Uss Kelvin

Rear 3/4 view of the Uss Kelvin

For a full 360 look at the ship, plus details about the bridge, warp engine and hangar bay head over to BoldlyGo.Intel.com and click on the “Starfleet Database” icon.

Loads Of New Pics From Punisher: War Zone

28 November 2008 11:44 AM, PST

It seems as though the powers that be behind Punisher: War Zone have finally come to the conclusion that they need to ramp up the marketing campaign if they want people to actually go see this much-belabored film. Lately the TV spots have been popping up like zits on a fanboy’s face, and now new stills from the movie are flooding the Net in droves.

Taking a cue from our friends over at Latino Review, we here at Screen Rant have gathered a hefty pile of new Punisher pics for your viewing pleasure. Some are stills from the finished movie, others are production stills taken on the set while cast and crew tried work out how best to convey the dark story of Frank Castle, and his quest to punish the guilty.

Josh Brolin (Almost) In Terminator Salvation

26 November 2008 11:47 AM, PST

If you folks remember, rumors spread like wildfire earlier this year that Josh Brolin was in the running for a lead role in Terminator Salvation. Granted, that information came out of the mouth of the film’s director McG.

And while I generally give filmmakers the benefit of the doubt in the “truth-telling” department, I make an exception with McG. What with all the “I’ve gotten James Cameron’s blessing” stuff he started at Comic-Con.

Nonetheless, Sam Worthington was ultimately given the role in question - that of Marcus Wright (i.e. the new Terminator!)

Speaking to the MTV Movies Blog (probably doing press for his upcoming film Milk), Brolin confessed that he was in fact almost cast.

As the man who would be Dubya explained:

“Yeah, I talked to Christian [Bale] for a couple hours. I really liked the script though I hear that’s not what they filmed.

Hugh Jackman Talks Wolverine Movie (Plus A New Pic!)

25 November 2008 10:01 PM, PST

Things have been quiet on the Wolverine movie front since August, but today Empire Magazine was kind enough to send us a preview of their January issue and it includes a brand new image of a ripped and huge Hugh Jackman as Wolverine from the upcoming movie, plus some new info about how he approached the character, and director Gavin Hood comments about rumors of problems surrounding the film.

Hugh Jackman on ramping up the action in upcoming X-Men Prequel X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

“We ended up doing quite a lot of it. I wanted the fight scenes to be a little more brutal- I want people to wince a bit more.”

Hugh Jackman on drawing inspiration from De Niro:

“I had this image in my head of De Niro in that remake of Cape Fear, You were terrified of that character from the moment he took his shirt off…; you

Stallone Says Dolph Lundgren Is Expendable

25 November 2008 8:53 PM, PST

It was just over two weeks ago when we reported that Sylvester Stallone is making his own badass action flick as a result of his not getting a role in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds (where it was long rumored he’d be the lead). Stallone thought he’d instead just make his own movie about a team of action stars and that’s exactly what he’s doing.

The movie is called The Expendables and the title references what this team of mercenaries is and why they get the missions they do - it also reflects back on a quote from Rambo: First Blood Part II where Rambo says he is “expendable” in reference to why he was chosen.

With the announcement of the film it was also reported that Jason Statham and Jet Li were to star alongside Stallone. Now comes news that Stallone is in talks with

The Death Of Batman? Seriously?

25 November 2008 8:30 PM, PST

If you can believe it, there is currently an in-progress comic book story arc involving Batman which will end in the death of… Bruce Wayne.

Written by Grant Morrison and penciled by Tony Daniel and Alex Ross, the series is a cheap response to Marvel’s recent killing off of Captain America.

According to Grant Morrison, “the end of Bruce Wayne as Batman” is “a fate worse than death, things that no one would expect to happen to these guys at all.” It is rumored that Batman will emphatically die tomorrow, November 26, at comic book news stands everywhere.

Unknown though, is who is behind the character’s demise. Some say it will be at the hands of Robin (Tim Drake) when he makes a play for the dark side. Others insist it will be at the hands of the mysteriously unknown villain “The Black Glove.” Still others speculate that Wayne

Awesome Terminator Salvation Poster

25 November 2008 1:42 PM, PST

Opinion on the forthcoming Terminator: Salvation has been mixed to say the least. However, with each new bit of news it would appear that director McG has done the unthinkable - firstly he may have finally made a decent film, and secondly (and more importantly) he may also have made a damn good Terminator film.

Who’d have thunk it?

And now we have the first look at the film’s poster and guess what?

It looks fantastic!

Check it out below:

Pretty damn impressive!

However, this is also a “motion poster” and if you check here you can see that it really is smoking hot.

If McG has made a Terminator prequel that not only holds a candle to Cameron’s first two films and manages to reignite the franchise; then we could have many years of cool destruction ahead of us!

Also if any eagle eye’d fans

Battlestar Galactica 4.5: “If I’m a Cylon, you’re really screwed.”

25 November 2008 7:29 AM, PST

That right there is the last thing we saw at the end of season 4.0. A wrecked planet we Presume to be Earth.

As things currently stand, some Cylons believe they are the children of humanity. That would make humans their parents. Other Cylons believe that parents have to die because it’s the only way children come into their own.

And that’s how we’re looking at the upcoming season of Battlestar Galactica 4.5.

I’m tired of waiting, but we only have a little bit longer to go and an online teaser has been put out there - and they’ve even titled it! It’s called Epic Journey. (I think they might be referring to the viewers who have had to wait so dang long.)

January 2009 is going to be one heck of a month for many shows that started taking their mid-season breaks earlier this year. Most

Is ‘I Am Legend 2′ A Sequel Or A Prequel?

24 November 2008 8:02 PM, PST

Hmmmm…Didn’t the end of the theatrical version of I Am Legend result in Will Smith being blown to hell by his own grenade? Oh…. uhh… Spoiler alert?

A source of Ain’t It Cool News provided them with an interesting possible update to the status of the next I Am Legend film. It was originally thought to be a prequel for the obvious reason that Will Smith’s character, Robert Neville, died at the end of the film.

I guess studios will stop at nothing to make a franchise out of something – whether it be prequels, sequels, reboots, etc. In this case though, the source for AICN has yet to be tested so this could all be mumbo jumbo.

Interestingly enough, the alternate ending of I Am Legend (which was far better in my opinion) that came along on the DVD has Neville living while paying tribute to

TV & Movie Marketing Prediction: In Your Face

24 November 2008 6:43 PM, PST

“… the only people watching a show — ‘Heroes’ perhaps — at the time it’s being broadcast by a network — say NBC — are the “saps and [expletives] who can’t figure out how to watch it in a superior way.”

It’s a fascinating contrast to his image from the writers strike, but that’s how Tim Kring “complimented” his viewers at the Creative Screenwriting magazine’s 2008 Screenwriting Expo. By referring to the couch jockeys that help make up the ratings as “saps and expletives,” all the while trying to explain away that the bad ratings for Heroes aren’t his fault. I think he’s trying to avoid the same ax that came along and took out 2 other writers from the NBC Heroes-wagon.

What does Kring mean by “superior way” to watch? He’s referring to online or recorded (DVR) programming where a show is watched later.

It seems that he

For Your Consideration: The Dark Knight

24 November 2008 6:08 PM, PST

Warner Bros. has launched an ad campaign for The Dark Knight, lobbying for Oscar nominations in 15 different categories. A campaign for 28 different people, in front of and behind the camera, for those little golden statues for this year’s Academy Awards.

In the latest edition of Variety and various places around the internet you’ll more than likely find advertisements for Tdk as we approach nomination season for the annual Oscars night. From “Best Sound Mixing” to the prized “Best Picture,” Nolan and Co. hope to grab some well-deserved statues. Having delivered the highest grossing film this year, Warner Bros. is looking to help in that effort and spend some of that money on the heroes that brought The Dark Knight to the big screen.

Vying for a number of different awards, nearly every category it is eligible for has been suggested. The aforementioned “Best Picture” accompanies “Best Director” and

Incredible Hulk 2 Will Deliver The Leader

24 November 2008 3:44 PM, PST

MTV recently caught up with writer/director/actor Tim Blake Nelson (O Brother Where Art Thou?) and picked his gamma-contaminated brain about reprising his role as Dr. Samuel Sterns in the rumored-to-be-happening sequel to this summer’s moderately successful Marvel reboot, The Incredible Hulk.

Note: The interview with Nelson was a follow-up to an interview MTV did with super-producer Gale Ann Hurd (The Terminator Trilogy, Hulk, Punisher: War Zone), in which Hurd made it clear that it is her intention to see Incredible Hulk 2 make it into theaters, ideally with all of the original cast in tow.

So what do Hurd’s words mean for Tim Blake Nelson’s future?  Last we saw Dr. Samuel Stern, he was seeing green after a beaker of Bruce Banner’s gamma-radiated blood spilled on his noggin. So if everything goes according to Hurd’s plan, expect Doc Stern to become the the

Astro Boy Teaser Trailer

24 November 2008 3:40 PM, PST

The first teaser trailer for the upcoming CGI adaptation of long-running anime series Astro Boy has finally hit the Web and it looks…pretty cool, actually.

If you haven’t seen any of the Astro Boy TV series that have come and gone since the 1950’s, the story tells of a distant future in which a brilliant inventor (voiced by Nicholas Cage) creates the world’s ultimate battle robot in the guise of his dead son. Hoping to win his “father’s” numbed affections, Astro Boy sets off on a heroic journey, battling other robot gladiators and defending Metro City from the villains who would destroy it. He even manages to find a girlfriend along the way (voiced by queen of the fanboys, Kristen Bell).

Check out the Trailer.

[See post to watch Flash video]

Pretty cool, right? The filmmakers over at Imagi Studios definitely aren’t slacking in the CGI department. A cutesy robot who

24: Redemption - Day 7 Prequel Gets Some Fresh Air

24 November 2008 9:36 AM, PST

24: Redemption is the prequel to 24: Day 7. It’s also the gift to us, the viewers, for having to wait for the next season of 24 for such a long period of time.

In Redemption we meet a collection of characters as this prequel takes place between the hours of 3 and 5Pm.

A most annoying bug named Frank Trammell (Gil Bellows) who is a govt lackey trying to serve a subpoena to Jack to get him to a Senate Subcommittee questioning session. Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) is in Africa helping out at a school for young boys run by an old special OPs buddy Carl Benton (Robert Carlyle). The evil of this 2-hour dose of action is Colonel Benjamin Juma (Tony Todd) who’s abducting young children, brainwashing them into becoming his army of gun-toting children. It’s haunting to have this addressed in plain view. Colonel Juma leads a

Are You Ready For Black Dynamite?

24 November 2008 8:17 AM, PST

Fellow Screen Rant writer Rob Keyes was kind enough to put me on to the red band trailer for Black Dynamite, a hilarious (and raunchy) spoof of 60’s & 70’s blaxploitation films, starring Michael Jai White (Spawn) as the titular character, Black Dynamite.

He’s a Kung-Fu man of the ghetto, out to protect his neighborhood from The Man, that white fiend ultimately responsible for all the drug pushers and malt liquor purveyors who plague the ghetto. When The Man kills Black Dynamite’s brother in cold blood, things get personal and Black Dynamite goes looking for some payback, baby!

If that synopsis isn’t enough to persuade you, you’ve just gotta check out the extended trailer. Be Warned however; it is a red-band trailer and is absolutely Not for kids.

Black Dynamite also stars comedians Arsenio Hall and Tommy Davidson as “Tasty Freeze” and “Cream Corn.” The rest of

ABC Trims The Daisies, But Likes Life On Mars

23 November 2008 7:45 PM, PST

Yes, they found glaciers on Mars that might contain genetic fragments of past microbial life and possible air samples from it’s past.  That’s cool to me.  But that’s not this site.  Sorry.  If you’re looking for the scientific stuff, check it out on Reuters.

But if you’re a TV fan then you may know (or not) that Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone and Dirty Sexy Money have gone before the ratings executioner and lost.  After their initial order of 13 episodes are aired, the shows are done.

On the other hand, Life On Mars, starring Jason O’Mara has moved forward with an extra four episodes getting ordered and is sliding in behind Lost on Wednesday nights starting January 28th.  This looks to be a strong combination of shows for the evening.  Right now it follows Grey’s Anatomy, but isn’t doing as excellent as they think it should.
