'Captain America' Scribes Announced

19 November 2008 9:38 AM, PST | From Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news

Just weeks after signing Joe Johnston to direct First Avenger: Captain America, Marvel Studios has announced that Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are likely to be the screenwriters. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the duo is in final negotiations to step in,

The film comes with many complicating factors starting with a locked in release date of May 6, 2011 and the need to include elements that have been established in Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk as well as setting up plot threads that will play out two months later in The Avengers film.

The movie will be set during World War II and feature scrawny Steve Rogers, denied enlistment in the army but invited to be a test subject for Project Super Solider.  He is then transformed into the star-spangled hero and issued a red, white, and blue uniform to inspire the troops and general public as Captain America.

'Captain America' Finds His Storyteller

19 November 2008 1:46 AM, PST | From Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Marvel has done well in their second turn in keeping their next big superhero in the news cycle as news screenwriting duo Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have been brought aboard to pen the script for First Avenger: Captain America based on the 1941 Jack Kirby and Joe Simon created comicbook superhero. Markus and McFeely both contributed to the first two Narnia films as well as the Ben Kingsley 2007 starrer You Kill Me. The news comes 9 days after director Joe Johnston was named as the film's helmer, but there still remains no word on who is being considered for the lead role of Steve Rogers a man deemed too frail to enter the Army, but through a secret 'Super-Soldier Serum' he becomes a perfect specimen. Following his transformation he sets out as Captain America in a war against evil. Captain America is also the leader of the superhero group knows as the Avengers,

‘Captain America’ Gets ‘Narnia’ Writers

19 November 2008 1:04 AM, PST | From MovieBlog.Ugo.com | See recent Ugo MovieBlog news

Variety has word that Marvel Studios has signed Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely to script “Captain America,” a film that has Joe Johnston attached to direct. The red-white-and-blue clad hero with the mighty indestructible shield came to prominence right after the invasion of Pearl Harbor as the U.S. declared war on Japan. The hero is the Marvel character most closely associated with the United States. Given Marvel’s reliance on global grosses for hits like “Iron Man,” the property will provide an interesting litmus test on the world’s appetite for an all-American hero by the time the film is released and distributed by Paramount in 2011. Marvel’s Kevin Feige is producing. Markus and McFeely were co-writers of both ”Chronicles of Narnia” films as well as the HBO telepic “The Life and Death of Peter Sellers.”

Terrence Howard Tries To Court Married Model Noemie Lenoir

18 November 2008 11:40 PM, PST | From icelebz.com | See recent iCelebz news

Terrence Howard has been attempting to romance French model Noemie Lenoir. The "Iron Man" star reportedly set his sights on stunning Noemie at a hotel opening last week and tried to serenade her, despite the fact she is happily married to soccer star Claude Makelele with a three-year-old son.

A source told the New York Post newspaper: "Terrence saw Noemie in the crowd and started singing to her. He came to see her the next night at the Victoria's Secret show, and really likes her."

Terrence - who split from wife Lori McCommas, with who he has three children, in 2005, but has since tried to get their relationship back on track - previously revealed he would only consider dating a woman who used moist towelettes after going to the toilet.

He said: "If a woman is using dry paper, they aren't washing all of themselves. It's just unclean. So if

New to Home Video: 'Wall-e,' 'Tropic Thunder,' Pants that Travel Again

18 November 2008 4:28 AM, PST | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

There are some real heavy hitters on DVD this week, a sign that holiday shopping is just around the corner. You know, usually, you'll get one big DVD, and then a Aaa player or two and then down into the lower rungs of the minor league system. But this week, there are two $100 million flicks, one of them a $200 million movie, and it comes just two or three weeks too late to save Circuit City. Damn.

this position now is quite a feat. The studio has done a masterful job creating a niche and a need with Twilight, and gobbling up the sequels (which will have their own high-selling soundtracks) is an easy way to keep the money train on its tracks.

Wall-e

DVD sales will be muy importante to Wall-e, which cost Disney and Pixar $180 million. Though the year's best reviewed film is certainly profitable, the margins aren't where

Kung Fu Panda on DVD and Blu-ray

18 November 2008 12:54 AM, PST | From www.canmag.com | See recent CanMag news

Kung Fu Panda may have surprised me in theaters . I had grown used to CG-animations looking flatter then their drawn counterparts . but I was ready for excellence on Blu-ray. With so many vibrant colors and, might I add, furry characters, the medium has a lot to work with here.

On Blu-Ray: Kung Fu Panda

Fortunately, the Blu-ray for Kung Fu Panda does not disappoint in the slightest. Since I got the film on DVD as well, I had to do a comparison. First off, the DVD looked great. Upconverted on my Blu-ray player, the DVD showed competitive vibrancy and contrast but was still lacking in that whole 3D effect created by 1080p-quality high definition. So in goes the Blu-ray.

Now this is what I.ve been waiting for! While both Iron Man and Transformers looked great on Blu-ray, I still have yet to see that 3D effect created by the HD medium.

Miller & Gough to Rebuild 'Robotech'

17 November 2008 3:09 PM, PST | From Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news

Smallville’s fathers, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, have been signed to adapt Robotech into a live-action feature for Warner Bros. No director, cast or production dates have been released.

The 1980s anime series ran in America courtesy of Harmony Gold USA and was one of the first noteworthy anime series from that era. It was actually the combination of three separate series created by Tatsunoko Prods. In order to satisfy the needs of American television syndication.

As a result, it became a “sprawling sci-fi epic, Robotech takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off an alien invasion, with the fate of the human race ending up in the hands of two young pilots.”

Weekend Box Office: 'Quantum of Solace' Breaks Bond Record

17 November 2008 5:32 AM, PST | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

For a franchise that's more than 45 years old, Bond is on one hell of a kick. Ever since Pierce Brosnan took over in 1995, every James Bond film has grossed more than the last, and that trend will continue with Quantum of Solace. The awkwardly-titled 22nd film in the franchise beat the previous Bond opening weekend record -- held, actually, by Die Another Day, which was eventually passed by Casino Royale later in its release -- by, oh, $23 million. Quantum's $70.4 million bow is also the third highest opening of 2008, behind only Iron Man, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and The Dark Knight.

And that, actually, is pretty much all there is to report for the wide releases, since Quantum of Solace scared everyone else off the date. Last weekend's winners, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa and Role Models both held up well, with the former pulling ahead of Wall-e.

DVD Review: Hancock (2008)

16 November 2008 9:34 PM, PST | From The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news

Ever since Independence Day became a smash back in 1996, the 4th of July has turned into Will Smith Blockbuster Weekend. Men in Black followed in 1997, and Smith has racked up plenty more mid-summer hits over the following decade.

Smith scored again with 2008.s Hancock, a superhero flick with a twist. Smith plays the title character, a man with tremendous powers who uses them begrudgingly. Bitter and depressed for reasons that become apparent as the story progresses, Hancock hits the bottle hard, and his attempts to do good often backfire. This means he often earns the animosity of the mortals, a trend that Hancock exacerbates with his caustic personality.

After Hancock saves his life, publicist Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman) decides to repay the hero with a PR makeover. Ray pushes to rehabilitate Hancock with the public and turn him into the hero he should be. The film follows that path along

Box Office - 'Quantum of Solace' Shatters Bond Record

16 November 2008 10:17 AM, PST | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

As expected, Quantum of Solace completely dominated the weekend box office, setting a new opening weekend record for James Bond film and outearning all but the last five movies in only three days.

The $70 million weekend passes last week's Madagascar debut for the fourth-best debut of 2008, according to Box Office Mojo, and it now seems pretty clear that this will be the first 007 movie to exceed $200 million in U.S. ticket sales. We've been covering the film's performance overseas as well, and while the most recent weekend numbers have not been reported yet, we do know that Solace will likely be near $300 million in global receipts by Monday.

The debut is even more impressive when you factor in that the film opened in 600 fewer theaters than Madagascar, Indiana Jones, Iron Man, and The Dark Knight. Where would the number be if the film had shown in 4,000 theaters this weekend? Probably in the $80 million ballpark,

Marvel Animation Announces Thor Series

14 November 2008 12:59 PM, PST | From Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news

Following the established pattern of creating an animated series in the wake of its live-action counterpart, Marvel has announced the arrival of Thor. The series has a 26-episode order, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and will debut in the fall of 2010, after the Kenneth Branagh-directed feature opens in July 2010.

The series appears to be faithful to the comic book’s use of Norse legend and high fantasy to tell its stories. Described by the trade as, “the Norse god of thunder, as he defends his mythical home of Asgard against fantastical villains, fiendish hordes, winged creatures and angry giants. The show will take place in various worlds -- from mountainous landscapes to places of icy mists and fiery voids -- and will include many of the comic's supporting cast, including Balder the Brave, the Warriors Three and Thor's evil adopted brother, Loki.”

Pick of 2008: The three best merchandise spots

14 November 2008 5:12 AM, PST | From Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news

With only a month and a half left of 2008, we at Boxwish are starting to get all nostalgic looking back over what has been a great year for films. In the action genre there was the return of old favourites Indiana Jones, James Bond and Batman with some exciting new kids on the block like Iron Man also making their mark. Boyish comedies consistently delivered laughs such as Tropic Thunder, Pineapple Express and Step Brothers, while ladies got a strong shout-out with the likes of Sex and the City and Mamma Mia! Adorable robot Wall•E stole hearts, musicals as diverse as High School Musical 3 and Sweeney Todd had us tapping our feet and directors such as Guy Ritchie (RocknRolla) and the Coen brothers (No Country for Old Men, Burn After Reading) made dramatic comebacks. And so as the year that was begins to wind up, we look back at

The Pilgrim by Mark Ryan and Mike Grell debuts on ComicMix

14 November 2008 4:56 AM, PST | From Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news

Today on ComicMix, we're starting a new story from Mark Ryan (Transformers) and Mike Grell (Jon Sable Freelance, James Bond: 007) that goes places no other story will go, starting from World War II to today's war on terror to realms unknown. It's an espionage story unlike any other, based in historical facts that are almost impossible to believe-- why did Ian Fleming recruit Aleister Crowley for the war effort, anyway?

The Pilgrim is written by Mark Ryan, who has one of the most varied careers you will ever encounter in your life: as an actor, going from originating the roles of Magaldi in Evita and Nasir in Robin of Sherwood to playing Bumblebee in Transformers and appearing with Eric Idle at Carnegie Hall while wearing a green dress; as a fight director, he taught Keira Knightley, Stellan Skarsgard and Clive Owen how to swordfight; as a writer, he's written Green

Howard 'Pulling It Together' After Mum's Death

13 November 2008 11:09 PM, PST | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Actor Terrence Howard is slowly getting his life back on track following the death of his mother.

The Iron Man star's mum, Anita Williams, passed away in September after a long battle with cancer.

Howard stepped away from the limelight to grieve for his beloved parent - but is now taking steps to deal with her passing.

He writes on his blog, "I know that I have been quiet but I had a lot going on. But I am slowly pulling it together."

The actor made an appearance at a Miami, Florida store on Saturday, which he calls "the furthest that I have gone from home since my mom's funeral last month."

And he admits that he often compartmentalises life before and after the tragedy.

He adds, "It's weird that in your mind you separate all things into places and people you knew before your mom passed and the people you meet and places you go after mom passed. I wonder when that stops."

Jigsaw Pics From Punisher: Warzone

13 November 2008 3:25 PM, PST | From ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news

So there’ve been a lot of rumors surrounding Punisher: War Zone. Everything from day one script problems to rumors of the director being fired and even talk of the finished movie being as horrendous as the heavy metal soundtrack.

This overwhelming flood of rumors has effectively drowned out the usual questions we hear about comic book movies: Is the lead actor/actress doing right by the character? Is the director being faithful to the source material? Is the film more Dark Knight (gritty, real) or more Iron Man (tongue-and-cheek fun)? And of course, in this post-Joker era we must ask how good is the villain going to be?

To answer that question Screen Rant got a hold of the latest pictures of War Zone’s main villain, the deformed gangster known as Jigsaw (The Wire’s Dominic West). And we’re delving into the 1,000 words about the character that the pictures are worth.

Help the People Choose Correctly!

13 November 2008 12:11 PM, PST | From DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news

As everyone knows, I'm DC's resident awards show junkie, and while even I usually give the People's Choice Awards a pass, I couldn't help but notice their contenders in the Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Show category, all of which have been the topic of much discussion around these parts.

The three nominated shows are "Heroes", "Supernatural", and "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles". The fact that "Heroes" made the cut is pretty disheartening considering how far it has declined since its debut, but the other two are more than worthy. For me it was a tough call, but in the end I had to cast my vote for the Winchester brothers.

Other categories that have some relevance to Dread Central readers are:

Favorite Action Movie

The Dark Knight

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Iron Man

Influential Comic Book Returns in Hardcover

Watchmen: Hardcover Edition

By Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons (DC Comics)

Whenever a new comic book-inspired movie is a big hit, comic book stores report that sales of that hero’s books often spike. Which is why, this past summer, books by Batman, Iron Man, and The Hulk did brisk business. But so too did another comic, one that won’t be seen on the big screen until March of next year, but got a bump nonetheless when its trailer appeared both online and at the San Diego Comic Con: Watchmen, the groundbreaking 1986/86 graphic novel by writer Alan Moore (From Hell, V for Vendetta) and artist Dave Gibbons (Give Me Liberty, Captain America). Though this book has often been called “unfilmable,” and not just by Moore, the rather impressive trailer got enough fans so excited that the book started flying off store shelves.

'The Dark Knight' Leads Nominees For Utterly Worthless People's Choice Awards

12 November 2008 1:55 PM, PST | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

They still haven't shut down The People's Choice Awards, and they'll air next January, hosted again by Queen Latifah. These awards, of course, are very rarely indicative of anything else. Sometimes you'll see some carryover from the Golden Globes to the Oscars, and there are a couple of film critics' groups that are usually good predictors of the Academy Awards, too, but The people's Choice Awards can really only give you pointers in your Blockbuster Movie Awards office pool.

It's the 35th annual celebration, which means prior to 1974, people had no choice. That really is a shame, isn't it?

This might all see like I'm making fun of this awards show, because I am. Look: They've got 27 Dresses in the Favorite Comedy Movie category. Come on! No Tropic Thunder? Hell, they didn't even give Sex and the City the obligatory nomination. And Reese Witherspoon is up for Favorite Female Movie
