Sound Off: Who's Watching the New 'At The Movies'?

16 September 2008 2:02 PM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

Truth be told, I sort of skimmed through one episode of the new youth-skewed At The Movies, featuring Ben Lyons and Ben Mankiewicz -- and since there wasn't a segment in which viewers were allowed to throw hard, pointy objects at NY Post critic Lou Lumenick, I turned my attention elsewhere. In her blog today, Variety's Anne Thompson points out a fact we all saw coming from two thumbs away: That, well, no one seems to like the new show. Thompson looks to the many evil emails she's received since this new version of At The Movies aired, and she's not alone. In our post announcing the critic switch, Cinematical readers have been rather harsh. Here are a few comments:

Debbie: "Two thumbs down for the new replacements, they have much to learn and very large shoes to fill"

Orlando: "Horrible! The quality and style one could expect from the

Disney Swiftly Replaces Ebert And Roeper

23 July 2008 10:27 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

The Walt Disney Co. has wasted no time in finding replacements for Roger Ebert and Richard Roeper as hosts of the syndicated Ebert & Roeper and the Movies. Two days after Roeper quit the show and one day after Ebert did -- he has actually not appeared on it since a 2006 operation left him unable to speak -- Disney said that they will be succeeded by Ben Lyons, currently a film critic for E! Entertainment channel and Ben Mankiewicz, who hosts a movie discussion show on the cable network TCM (Turner Classic Movies). Disney also said that the show will be revamped, with a new set, graphics and theme and that a new segment will be added in which the two hosts will discuss new movies by satellite with other film critics. A spokeswoman for Disney-ABC Domestic Television, which syndicates the show, denied earlier reports that Ebert & Roeper and the Movies will be converted into an entertainment magazine show along the lines of Entertainment Tonight.

Roeper Quitting At The Movies

21 July 2008 10:30 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

At the Movies With Ebert & Roeper will apparently become another entertainment magazine show along the lines of Entertainment Tonight following Sunday's announcement by Chicago Sun-Times columnist Richard Roeper that he will leave the show next month. In a statement, Roeper said, "I wish Disney the best of luck with their new show, whatever form it may take." Roeper said that he intends to launch another movie-review show after his contract with the Walt Disney Co., which syndicates At the Movies, ends in mid-August. He joined Roger Ebert as the permanent co-host of the show in 2000, one year after the death of Gene Siskel, who had reviewed movies in tandem with Ebert since 1975, when they debuted on a Chicago public television station. They moved to commercial TV in 1982. Ebert has not appeared on the show since 2006 due to complications from surgery that left him unable to speak. "In the meantime, it is my intention to proceed elsewhere with my ninth year as the co-host of a movie review show that honors the standards established by Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert more than 30 years ago," Roeper said. "I will be free to share the details on that program in the near future."
