In May 1998, Gene Siskel had surgery to remove a tumor from his brain. For several weeks he did the show via telephone from his hospital bed.
The weekend following Gene Siskel's death, Roger Ebert devoted the entire half hour as a tribute to his memory. On the show were various clips from show's past as well their history together as journalists and then on television.
There is a widely held belief and the Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert disagreed most of the time. This is, in fact, not true. Actually they agree most of the time on either a negative or positive review but since they were best known for the feuds in between, the legend has grown that the two were always at odds with one another. Taken from all of the films that they reviewed in their years together they actually only disagreed about 30% of the time.
After Gene Siskel's death, from 1999 to 2000, several movie critics appeared as guest co-hosts, until Richard Roeper (who also appeared as a guest co-host for several episodes) became Siskel's permanent replacement.
