Milk Movie Trailer 2

3 December 2008 11:00 PM, PST | From toxicshock.tv | See recent toxicshock news

Focus Features recently released another brand new movie trailer from the drama “Milk” by director Gus Van Sant (Paranoid Park, Finding Forrester, Psycho) and starring Sean Penn (21 Grams), Josh Brolin (American Gangster, Grindhouse), Emile Hirsch (Speed Racer) and James Franco (Spider-Man 3). Synopsis: Academy Award winner Sean Penn takes the title role in Gus Van Sant’s biopic tracing the last eight years in the life of Harvey Milk, the ill-fated politician and gay activist whose life changed history, and whose courage still inspires people. When Milk was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977, he made history for being the first openly gay man in American history [...]

Dark Castle Secure for Another Five Years

3 December 2008 | From shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news

According to Variety, Germany's Studio Babelsberg has pacted with Joel Silver and his production outfit Dark Castle Entertainment for a five-year, 15-pic co-production deal. All films will be released by Warner Bros. which has used Babelsberg for Speed Racer , V for Vendetta and the upcoming Ninja Assassin . The company said a key part of the deal with Silver is that it will have "influence on the script, casting and other relevant decisions." "With the agreement, we're not only taking a stake in the earnings from Dark Castle films, but they will also strengthen our position as a producer," Babelsberg's Carl Woebcken tells Variety. The upcoming production slate has not been revealed, however, the first picture could get rolling as soon as next spring....

Interview: Emile Hirsch on Milk, San Francisco, and More!

27 November 2008 8:20 AM, PST | From firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news

Gus Van Sant's Milk boasts one of the best ensemble casts this year. In addition to Sean Penn's phenomenal performance as Harvey Milk, James Franco, Josh Brolin, and Emile Hirsch all shine in their supporting roles as well. After seeing Milk a few weeks back, I sat down with Emile Hirsch to chat about playing curly haired gay activist Cleve Jones. Coincidentally, our writer Kevin sat down for an interview with the real Cleve Jones a few days later. So today I present the second part in our set of interviews this week - this time with the actor who brought Jones and his personality to life on the screen. Hirsch and I talk about working with Gus Van Sant, San Francisco, and even a little bit about Speed Racer, so read on. I've been fond of Emile ever since The Emperor's Club in 2002, but have really seen

Milk

26 November 2008 1:00 PM, PST | From Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news

Speed Racer Release Date: Nov. 26

Director: Gus Van Sant

Writers: Dustin Lance Black

Cinematographer: Harris Savides

Starring: Sean Penn, Emile Hirsch, Josh Brolin, Diego Luna, James Franco

Studio Information: Focus Features, 128 mins.

Today, Harvey Milk is remembered as a local hero in San Francisco, and Sean Penn’s joyful, deeply layered portrayal in a new biopic by Gus Van Sant gives us a pretty good idea why. Harvey was the first openly gay person elected to public office in the U.S., and he served on San Francisco's board of supervisors until he and mayor George Moscone were shot and killed by a fellow supervisor, Dan White, in 1978. But the lasting image of the film isn't a gunshot or a riot but the ear-to-ear grin that tops Penn’s compact, gesticulating frame.

For Your Consideration - Heath Ledger in 'The Dark Knight'

22 November 2008 10:41 PM, PST | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

We officially kicked off our For Your Consideration coverage about ten days ago with a look at Warner Bros.' official awards-friendly website. It only featured The Dark Knight and Gran Torino, the new Clint Eastwood movie due out in December. Does that mean they're punting on the rest of their movies? I don't know, but it's odd that they'd have Gran Torino on there already and not some of their earlier films, like Body of Lies, Appaloosa, and even for technical awards, Speed Racer and Journey to the Center of the Earth.

But the studio is, no doubt, behind The Dark Knight, as evidenced by the new full-page ad in Variety touting some guy in make-up.

Thanks to Batman On Film via Slashfilm

I still think Heath Ledger has the best shot to win Best Supporting Actor, and the movie's best shot to win a major award. We'll update

Kung-Fu Panda Director to Helm He-Man Movie?

20 November 2008 2:41 PM, PST | From ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news

Our friends over at Latino Review recently got word that the director of one of my favorite films of 2008, the phenomenal (and seriously underrated) Kung-Fu Panda has been tapped to helm another action epic for the younger sect: A remake of 80’s cartoon hit, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.

With all the talk in recent months about which directors are going to be handling which upcoming comic/cartoon films (Captain America being the latest buzz headliner), I have to say this bit of news has me the most excited. After all I loved He-Man as a kid, and I loved Kung-Fu Panda like I was still a kid. I see Panda’s director, John Stevenson, doing great things with He-Man, if he can get it into theaters before it ends up D.O.A., again.

However, it looks as though the film is moving forward. Stevenson was seen

"Lost" Composer Michael Giacchino Scoring the Oscars

17 November 2008 11:32 PM, PST | From JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news

Michael Giacchino has been named the musical director for next year's 81st annual Academy Awards. Earlier this year at the 80th annual Academy Awards, he was nominated for an Oscar for his work on Ratatouille. He won't be up for any awards this year, since his only movie work in 2008 was Speed Racer, and it's ineligible because it makes use of an old theme song.

Details Emerge About 'Magneto' Storyline

12 November 2008 6:59 AM, PST | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

Although a couple of movies that opened this May had disappointing American box office returns (Speed Racer, Prince Caspian), it's almost a guarantee that May 2009 will be hit after hit...after hit...after hit.

Leading the way, at least chronologically, is X-Men Origins: Wolverine. It's a great way to continue the franchise by giving the primary characters their own standalone projects. As of now, the only other Origins movie even announced is Magneto. Production Weekly has received an "official" plot summary (and we'll say "official" until it comes directly from Fox or writer-director David Goyer) that reveals a lot of Charles Xavier, believe it or not.

“The original X-Men film began with a prologue that showed the character as a child being led to a concentration camp by Nazis and that is the period in which the Magneto film will take place. This setup will allow a future villain to

Speed Racer (2008) Boy racer flings himself around a series of psychedelic tracks that make Super Mario Kart look like Pong. Why it made us sick: Watching Speed Racer is like have your face intermittently dipped into a barrel full of skittles, a sink full of lemonade and a ditch full of monkey tears. 19 October 2008 9:33 AM, PDT | From ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news

Sunday again and that means that it is time for the Weekend Movie News Wrap Up.

This week:

We see who is top of the box office; Kevin Smith ups his budget and goes into space; Brad Pitt goes on an Odyssey and plays an Unfair Game; Liam Neeson and Christina Ricci do Life and Ronin zooms to the small screen.

Box Office

Marky Mark Wahlberg is the box office champion with Max Payne. The film should manage about $20 million over the weekend giving 20th Century Fox their first solid hit in months.

Oliver Stone’s W bucked the political movie trend by making a solid bit of cash. Grossing around $12Mm for the weekend the film should be a modest hit. Considering the current political overkill going on in the press this is a considerable coup.

The Secret Life of Bees had a modest opening too, and should match
