Michael Bolton's brilliant special

Valentine's Day: universal day of love or cynical commercial 'holiday'?

Regardless, who better than Michael Bolton - the king of cheesy love ballads - to celebrate it?

Bolton has embraced his Lonely Island-inspired comeback and it shows in "Michael Bolton's Big, Sexy Valentine's Day Special" special.

A tenuous plot - Santa has 75,000 surplus toys and asks Bolton to get lovers making babies in time for Christmas - leads to a telethon parody, with phones manned by Bob Saget, Janeane Garofalo, Brooke Shields and Sinbad.

There's plenty of silliness here: Sarah Silverman and Randall Park sing a filthy 'Sonny and Cher'-esque song, Andy Samberg's Kenny G battles Bolton (with the real Kenny G as a janitor), Chris Parnell walks Bolton through a depressingly realistic VR encounter, Bolton duets with fictional twin Michael Folton and Maya Rudolph sings an impressive song about key change.

Through all this silliness, Bolton plays straight man, watching his telethon spiral.

Bolton can afford to do this as his singing is the highlight; 'Old Time Rock and Roll' (with an intense choreography training scene led by Michael Sheen), 'How Am I Supposed to Live Without You?', 'Nessun Dorma' and a piano version of the Jack Sparrow song. He's also fond of spontaneously breaking into song during sentences. By the end, Bolton embraces "peak 90s Bolton" (with long hair and too much denim) to save the telethon.

'Sexy' may be silly, but it's funny and Bolton is game for anything.
